Twelve-year-old Beth Phelps was just like any other child—healthy, energetic, and full of life. But one ordinary evening changed everything. As she brushed her teeth before bed, her parents noticed a strange lump showing through her T-shirt on her shoulder. It was a moment that would mark the beginning of a heartbreaking journey.
A doctor’s visit quickly escalated into a devastating diagnosis: a 7cm tumor in Beth’s lung. She had Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer most parents have never even heard of.
Beth bravely endured countless rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. Against all odds, she was eventually declared cancer-free. But her fight wasn’t over.
Just months later, in June 2022, Beth began feeling pain in her right shoulder. The cancer had returned—this time in the other lung. The prognosis was far more grim.
On October 3, 2022, Beth passed away. Her parents were offered a last-chance clinical trial but chose palliative care, wanting her final days to be filled with peace, not more pain.
“She had no symptoms at all,” recalled her father, Ben Phelps. “Beth was a healthy little girl. We’d never even heard of Ewing sarcoma.”
Though terrified of needles, Beth faced every treatment with extraordinary courage. Her spirit continues to inspire those she left behind.
To honor her memory and fight for a future where other children have a better chance, Ben is taking on an incredible challenge: cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats—nearly 1,000 miles. The ride raises money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust, supporting efforts to develop gentler treatments and improve survival rates.
Beth may be gone, but her light endures—in her family’s love, in their mission, and in every life they hope to save.
