Heartbreaking Tragedy on Rodovia do Sol: Young Couple Killed While Changing Tire

Last week, the peaceful roads of Espírito Santo were shattered by a devastating accident on the Rodovia do Sol that left a young couple and their loved ones reeling in grief. What began as a routine stop to change a flat tire turned into a fatal collision that has deeply shaken the local community.

The Accident Unfolds

According to Military Police reports, the couple was traveling in a Chevrolet Cruze when they pulled over on the shoulder to fix a flat tire. Suddenly, a speeding Chevrolet S10 pickup truck crashed into them. Emergency services arrived quickly; firefighters were already assisting the victims when police reached the scene.

Tragically, three occupants of the Cruze were rushed to nearby hospitals. Among them was Ingrid’s brother, who was also injured. The driver of the pickup truck had fled the scene but was later found and detained.

The Victims and Their Families

Maicon, the Cruze’s driver, and an unidentified passenger were taken to Marataízes Emergency Care Unit. Despite medical efforts, Maicon succumbed to multiple fractures sustained in the crash. Ingrid was transported to Menino Jesus Hospital but sadly did not survive.

The news devastated family and friends. Maicon’s uncle, Erivelto Ataliba, shared the heartbreak of that moment: “A friend called with the worst news—his nephew had been in an accident and had passed away. At first, I thought it was a joke. But it wasn’t. It feels like we’ve all lost our way.”

The S10 Driver’s Condition and Legal Action

Authorities found clear evidence that the S10 driver was intoxicated. At the hospital, he reluctantly agreed to a breathalyzer test but was unable to provide a proper sample, citing illness. Medical staff confirmed visible signs of intoxication, and he remains under police supervision as the investigation continues.

Ongoing Investigation and Community Response

The Civil Police have taken charge of the case. Maicon’s body was sent to the Legal Medical Service (SML) in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim for further examination. Authorities expect to bring the pickup truck driver into custody once discharged.

This tragedy is a somber reminder of the grave dangers of drunk driving and the fragility of life on our roads. The community mourns deeply, united in grief and committed to raising awareness to prevent future heartbreak.
