Karmelo Anthony hires new defense attorney as court date looms

Carmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old accused of fatally stabbing high school athlete Austin Metcalf, has changed his legal representation as his court date approaches. The deadly incident took place on April 2 during a track meet in Frisco, Texas.

According to witnesses, tensions flared after Metcalf reportedly asked Anthony to leave a tent designated for Frisco Memorial students. What began as a verbal exchange escalated within moments, ending in tragedy—Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest. The 17-year-old football standout died in the arms of his twin brother.

Anthony was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder. He remains in the Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond.

This week, Anthony’s family hired Dallas-based attorney Mike Howard to lead his defense, replacing former counsel Billy Clark and Kim T. Cole. The switch signals a possible shift in legal strategy as the high-profile case continues to draw intense public scrutiny.

Community reaction remains sharply divided. While many mourn the loss of Metcalf—a beloved athlete with a promising future—others have rallied behind Anthony, contributing over $400,000 to his legal defense fund.

Metcalf’s funeral was held privately this past Saturday, surrounded by close friends and family. The case has reignited passionate conversations about youth violence, race, school security, and justice in North Texas.

Rest in peace, Austin Metcalf.
