The Odessa community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Officer Bailey Martin, a devoted young police officer whose life was tragically cut short when flash floodwaters swept away the RV he was traveling in during a family vacation in Kerr County, Texas. His body was later discovered miles away in Travis County, with his Bible—inscribed with his name—found nearby, a haunting testament to his faith and character.
Officer Martin, who joined the Odessa Police Department in 2022, was known for his quiet strength, professionalism, and unwavering sense of duty. Police Chief Michael Gerke described him as a conscientious and highly respected officer who earned the admiration of both colleagues and the community. Remarkably, Martin began his training before he was even legally eligible to serve, a reflection of his drive, maturity, and deep commitment to protecting others.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Odessa Police Department and residents united in sorrow and solidarity. Flags were lowered to half-staff. Officers wore black mourning bands in silent tribute. Homes across the city glowed with blue porch lights—each one a symbol of remembrance and respect for a life taken too soon.
A memorial was held at City Hall, where civic leaders, friends, and fellow officers honored Martin’s sacrifice and spoke of the flood’s profound toll—not just on infrastructure and land, but on families, including Martin’s, who lost more than one beloved member in the disaster.
The Odessa Police Department continues to support Martin’s family and fellow officers as they cope with this unimaginable loss. While the floods left behind widespread devastation, it is the loss of Officer Martin—a kind soul, a protector, a beacon of hope—that cuts deepest for those who knew him.
His legacy of service, compassion, and quiet courage will live on in the hearts of all he touched.
