Oral cancer can strike the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and other parts of the mouth—and catching it early makes all the difference. The problem? Early symptoms are often so subtle that many people overlook them.

⚠️ One of the biggest warning signs: a sore that doesn’t heal within two weeks. The National Cancer Institute notes that these sores may appear on the lips, gums, or inside the mouth—and they might not hurt at all.

🚩 Other red flags to watch for:

  • White (leukoplakia) or red (erythroplakia) patches—Mayo Clinic warns that red patches are more likely to be cancerous.
  • Unexplained bleeding without injury.
  • Lumps, thickened or rough areas inside the mouth.
  • Persistent numbness, pain, or tingling in the lips, tongue, or chin (the American Dental Association stresses these changes should never be ignored).
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw.
