From 90 to 43: New Polls Reveal Trump’s Popularity Has Been Overestimated

New Polls Challenge House Speaker’s Claim of Trump’s 90% Popularity

House Speaker Mike Johnson recently praised former President Donald Trump’s soaring approval ratings during an appearance on CNBC News. Johnson enthusiastically stated, “His approval ratings are skyrocketing. Just a day or two ago, CNN reported he was at a 90 percent approval rating! There’s never been a president that high,” he confidently asserted.

But recent data tells a very different story. According to a July 17 CNN article, a poll conducted by the network found that only 42% of Americans currently support Trump, while just 37% believe he is setting the right goals for the country.

Adding to this, a separate poll by Reuters and IPSOS shows that only 41% of U.S. voters who participated in the latest elections backed Trump’s administration — far below the glowing picture painted by Johnson.

More Than Half of Americans Disapprove of Trump Despite Speaker’s 90% Claim

While House Speaker Mike Johnson recently touted Donald Trump’s “skyrocketing” approval rating of 90%, a closer look at recent polls tells a very different story.

A third poll by The Economist found that 55% of respondents disapprove of the former president. Meanwhile, Rasmussen Reports, in its July 18 survey, recorded the most favorable Trump rating in years — with just half of Americans supporting the businessman-turned-politician.

So, where did Johnson get that 90% figure? According to MSNBC, the Speaker appears to have selectively focused on Republican approval, disregarding broader public opinion. The CNN poll Johnson cited actually showed 88% of Republicans backing Trump — a figure Johnson seemingly rounded up to 90 without much scrutiny.

When comparing Trump’s popularity to past presidents, the contrast is striking. AZ Central notes that Bill Clinton once enjoyed a 66% approval rating, Barack Obama reached 59% at his peak, and Ronald Reagan came in second with 63%. On the flip side, Richard Nixon hit rock bottom with just 24%.

Trump’s approval during his first 100 days in office was lower than any president in the past six decades. Interestingly, his initial 42% approval closely mirrors CNN’s current rating, showing that public opinion hasn’t shifted much over the years.
