Community Mourns Johnsonville Teen as Investigation Unfolds

Authorities in Florence County have charged several Myrtle Beach teens in connection with the June 24, 2025, death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright following a late-night dispute in Johnsonville. Nine individuals are currently involved, with another expected to surrender soon.

Investigators believe the teens acted together and are being treated as accomplices under South Carolina law. Among those charged is 19-year-old Devan R., who was arrested the day after the incident. Others range in age from 17 to 18, with some released on bond and others awaiting court dates in detention. Four additional suspects, including juveniles, have not had their roles publicly disclosed.

Wright, a student-athlete at Johnsonville High School who played both football and baseball, is remembered by friends and family as kind, bright, and full of joy. A celebration of life was held on July 3, and a fundraiser raised more than $6,000 to help cover funeral expenses.

Sheriff TJ Joye called the tragedy “senseless,” attributing it to personal conflicts. As the investigation continues, the Johnsonville community mourns the loss of a young life, honoring Wright’s memory as someone who brought light and laughter to everyone who knew him.
