Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, a rising contender in the New York City mayoral race, didn’t hold back when addressing President Donald Trump during a Thursday press briefing.
His remarks came amid rumors that Trump might intervene in the mayoral contest. Mamdani vowed that, if elected, he would take a strong stand against the Trump administration, according to Fox News.
Adding to the drama, Fox News highlighted that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is running as an independent in the race. “Trump, as reported by The New York Times this week, recently had a phone conversation with Cuomo and has been consulting with allies about which candidate — Cuomo, current Mayor Eric Adams, or Republican Curtis Sliwa — stands the best chance of defeating Mamdani,” the outlet revealed.
Despite speculation about Trump’s involvement in the New York City mayoral race, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that the former president has no plans to intervene.
At a recent press conference, Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani fired a bold warning: “My administration would be Donald Trump’s worst nightmare.” He challenged skeptics to judge by the Trump administration’s actions since Mamdani clinched the Democratic primary.
“How else do you explain a president proposing to de-naturalize the Democratic nominee for New York City?” Mamdani asked. “How else do you describe a president entertaining ideas of deporting me, arresting me, or even taking control of the city against the will of its residents?”
“These are the actions of a president who fears that I will succeed where he has failed,” Mamdani asserted.
This isn’t the first time Mamdani has taken aim at Trump. Back in June, after emerging as the Democratic frontrunner, he declared that Trump “will target whoever becomes the next mayor of this city.” He emphasized the need for a mayor who “will actually fight back.”
“And that’s exactly what I intend to do,” he said. “I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare — a progressive Muslim immigrant fighting for what I believe in. Unlike Andrew Cuomo, my campaign isn’t bankrolled by billionaires who helped put Trump in power.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Socialists of America have publicly endorsed Mamdani, viewing his candidacy as a strategic opportunity to “seize state power,” according to Breitbart News.
Trump himself lashed out at Mamdani in June after he took the lead in the Democratic primary. On Truth Social, the former president called Mamdani “a 100% Communist Lunatic” and warned that his rise marked a dangerous new chapter.
“We’ve had radical leftists before, but this is getting ridiculous,” Trump wrote. “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, and he’s got AOC plus three other ‘dummies’ backing him. Even Senator Chuck Schumer is groveling at his feet. This is a big moment in the history of our country!”
