Democratic official announces from Mexico City: ‘I’m a Proud Guatemalan Before I’m an American’

Democrats Stir Controversy at Mexico City Summit with Sharp Rebukes of U.S. Policy

Over the weekend, several prominent Democratic lawmakers traveled to Mexico City for a high-profile summit that quickly ignited backlash for what critics called anti-American rhetoric. The gathering, billed as a forum for “equality” and “solidarity,” instead featured searing condemnations of U.S. policy and influence abroad.

Ramirez’s Remarks Ignite Political Firestorm
Among the most headline-grabbing moments came from Illinois Representative Delia Ramirez, who told the audience:

“I’m a proud Guatemalan before I’m an American.”

The daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, Ramirez—who represents parts of Chicago and its suburbs—went on to accuse the United States of being “addicted to w*r” and fueled by “imperialism, militarization, conquest, control, and competition.” Her personal biography notes she is in a “mixed-status” marriage, with a husband living in the U.S. without legal documentation—the only member of Congress in such a situation.

Summit Backed by Far-Left Groups
The event was co-hosted by Progressive International, a far-left group that describes capitalism as a “virus” to be “eradicated,” alongside Mexico’s ruling Morena party. While organizers publicly championed ideals of justice and solidarity, Progressive International leader David Adler acknowledged the deeper mission was to “confront” authoritarianism and “invert” global power—shifting influence away from Washington toward the Global South.

Israel-Hamas Conflict Overshadows Immigration Debates
Immigration was only part of the discussion. The ongoing Israel-Hamas war took center stage, with multiple speakers labeling the conflict as genocide. Representative Ilhan Omar, removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023 over past anti-Semitic remarks, joined a panel titled “Visions for the World,” voicing staunch support for the Palestinian cause.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, another member of the “Squad,” was celebrated as a “symbol of resistance” by Colombia’s Deputy Minister Mauricio Jaramillo Jassir, who praised her advocacy for Palestinians in the United States.

Mexican Senate Leader Blasts U.S. Migrant Policies
Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of Mexico’s Senate and a Morena party member, sharply criticized U.S. immigration enforcement—particularly under former President Trump. He likened detention practices to World W*r II-era facilities and accused the U.S. of hypocrisy in drug enforcement, claiming he had “never seen a single raid on drug dealers” carried out like immigration raids.

U.S. Immigration Officials Push Back
In response, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) maintains that its operations target individuals who break both immigration and criminal laws, with an emphasis on removing those who pose threats to public safety.
