Poll Reveals Winner in Hypothetical 2028 Trump vs. Obama Showdown
Voters Asked to Imagine the Impossible
A recent poll of over 1,000 registered U.S. voters posed a captivating question: What if Donald Trump and Barack Obama both ran for president in 2028?
Though the U.S. Constitution currently prohibits anyone from serving more than two presidential terms—and both Obama and Trump have already served two—rumors and hints about a possible return are stirring.
Trump Signals a Comeback
Earlier this year, in an NBC News interview, Trump suggested he was “not joking” about a potential 2028 run and hinted at “methods” that might allow him to return to the White House, despite constitutional limits.
Could Obama also re-enter the race if such legal avenues opened? That’s the intriguing scenario put forward by the Daily Mail and J.L. Partners in their latest survey.
Obama Holds a Strong Lead
Among the 1,013 registered voters surveyed:
- 52% said they’d vote for Barack Obama
- 41% favored Donald Trump
- 7% remained undecided or supported another candidate
Even accounting for a 3.1% margin of error, Obama maintains a clear edge.
Key Demographics Fuel Obama’s Lead
The former president’s advantage is especially strong among:
- Hispanic voters (73% support)
- Black voters (68% support)
- Independents (50% to Trump’s 39%)
These groups collectively helped Obama build an 11-point lead.
Trump’s Current Approval Rating: Nearly Even Split
The poll also revealed a sharply divided opinion on Trump’s current performance as president:
- 49% approve
- 51% disapprove
Trump Would Edge Out Clinton in a Rematch
Interestingly, when asked about a possible rematch between Trump and Hillary Clinton:
- 44% favored Trump
- 43% chose Clinton
This razor-thin margin hints that Clinton’s support has softened compared to Obama’s stronger position.
Trump Calls the Hypothetical Race “A Good One”
Though the Constitution stands in the way for now, Trump seemed energized by the possibility. In a March interview with Fox News, he said, “I’d love that… That would be a good one. I’d like that.”
