5-yr-old saves sister, dog from burning home then alerts rest of family

A five-year-old Georgia boy is being celebrated as a real-life hero after his quick thinking and bravery saved his entire family from a devastating house fire.

Noah Woods woke up Sunday morning to find flames flickering next to his bed. With no time to spare, he sprang into action. “I picked Lily up, got to the window with Lily, got the dog, and got out,” Noah told WSBTV. “That’s it.”

But in truth, it was far more than “just that.”

The electrical fire had erupted in the bedroom Noah shared with his two-year-old sister, Lily. Acting with remarkable calm, he scooped up Lily, grabbed the family dog, and escaped through the only available exit—a window. Once safely outside, Noah didn’t stop there. He ran back into the burning home to alert his uncle and help get the rest of the family out.

Thanks to Noah’s heroism, all nine members of the family survived the fire. Aside from a small burn on Noah’s wrist and minor injuries to four others, everyone made it out safely.

The Bartow County Fire Department hailed Noah’s courage, calling him “Our hero!” in a Tuesday post. “The only available exit was a window. He got himself and his 2-year-old sister out of the window to escape the fire and re-entered the house to alert the rest of the family,” the department wrote.

In recognition of his lifesaving bravery, Noah will be named an Honorary Bartow County Firefighter and will receive a Lifesaving Award from Fire Chief Dwayne Jamison this Friday.

“If it wasn’t for Noah, I mean, we were all asleep, so we wouldn’t have known what was going on,” said David Woods, Noah’s grandfather. “We could’ve all lost our lives.”

Thanks to Noah, all nine members of the family made it out safely. Their home, however, was a total loss.

Now facing the daunting task of rebuilding, the Woods family knows they’ve already received the greatest gift—each other. “If it wasn’t for Noah, we may not be here today,” David wrote.

Noah is being recognized as an Honorary Bartow County Firefighter and will receive a Lifesaving Award from the local fire department.
