A Michigan family is heartbroken after a devastating accident claimed the life of their 1-year-old daughter, Aurora Shepard. The toddler, who had just celebrated her first birthday in March, was accidentally struck by her grandmother’s riding lawn mower on June 29th at a home in Woodstock Township.
Emergency responders were called to the scene on Herold Highway shortly before 5 p.m. that Sunday afternoon, following reports that the young child had been critically injured. According to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, Aurora’s 52-year-old grandmother was mowing the lawn when the tragic accident occurred. Authorities revealed that the grandmother was unaware Aurora had wandered outside.
Despite frantic emergency efforts, Aurora was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, leaving her family and community in deep shock and grief.
Describing the tragedy, Amanda Lindeman shared on a GoFundMe campaign supporting Aurora’s parents, Sam Shepard and Alyssa Lindeman, “This is an unimaginable moment for all who knew Aurora — a beautiful little girl taken far too soon.”

A family member shared, “In a single, unimaginable moment, their world changed forever. Now, they are left grieving the sudden loss of their baby girl while facing the overwhelming emotional and financial burden of saying goodbye.”
A Leading Cause of Limb Loss in Children
While Aurora’s tragedy is deeply personal, it underscores a critical safety issue experts have long warned about. Riding lawn mowers are often treated as routine household equipment but pose serious risks—especially to toddlers who are small enough to easily disappear in mower blind spots.
Children’s Mercy Hospital reports that lawn mower accidents are among the leading causes of amputations in children and the number one cause of major limb loss for kids under 10 years old.
Every year in the United States, between 9,000 and 17,000 children suffer lawn mower injuries, with about 75 resulting in fatalities—tragically, including Aurora.
Devastating Physical and Emotional Impact
The physical injuries caused by lawn mower accidents can have lifelong consequences for the child. Equally devastating are the psychological effects on the operator—often a family member—who must live with the trauma of the incident.
Children’s Mercy stresses the importance of keeping young children indoors or well away from any operating power mowers. Even a brief moment of distraction can lead to catastrophic consequences, as young children can move quickly and unpredictably.
Aurora’s heartbreaking loss is a tragic reminder of how fast accidents can occur, even in familiar and trusted surroundings.
Unbearable Grief and a Call for Caution
Aurora’s parents, Sam Shepard and Alyssa Lindeman, have shared their profound sorrow and enduring love for their daughter, who brightened every day she lived.
“No parent should ever have to endure this kind of heartbreak,” Amanda Lindeman wrote on the GoFundMe page created to support the family, which has already raised over $10,000.
Authorities have not announced any charges. The incident appears to be a tragic accident and remains under investigation.
